House at Poros

Renovation of a traditional building, Poros, Greece

The building to be renovated is located in Poros, a picturesque island at the north-east side of Peloponnese. The structure is a representative sample of the local architecture with its great height, and the imposing size that characterize it.

The three-story eclectic building offers neoclassical elements with large dimensions nearly 12.65 x 12.6 m. The construction took place at the beginning of the 20th century, at about 1908-1910. Over its history, the building has been used as a branch of the National Bank of Greece and, at the same time, as the home of its administrator and subsequent prime minister of Greece, G. Korizis.

Currently, the building is not being used because of its failing situation, and the extensive decay that requires an immediate intervention. The Greek Ministry of Culture has set an order that characterizes the structure as an artwork, and determines that state protection is required.

In the framework of this project, the building is intended to be renovated and suitably remodeled so that two different families can be housed. Each of these families consists of the parents and their two children, aged 9-18 years old. For this reason, the building is going to be divided into three parts: two floors, one for each individual family, and the smaller top floor where all residents will have shared access. Also, thanks to the building’s great height, the opportunity exists to create additional lofts as part of every child’s room.

In every apartment, an effort was made to preserve the existent traditional architectural style. This is why materials like stone and wood have a leading role on basic parts of the home, from walls to furniture. However, at the same time, the furnishings were given a modern twist (style) as an attempt to connect the classic and contemporary trends.
